A Silver Screen presentation of a classic Brixton comedy by Horace Ové, the first Black British filmmaker to direct a feature film.
South London cricket team the Caribbean Brixton Conquistadors are invited to play a charity match in the Suffolk countryside. When they arrive, things do not remain wholly charitable and tensions arise between the teams. As the match approaches, both sides face difficulties and comic confusion ensues.
With a superb script by Caryl Philips and knockout performances by a cast including Norman Beaton (Desmond’s), this film is a gentle comedy about race and class in 1980s Britain. First shown on Channel 4 as part of its commitment to representing diverse voices during its early years, Playing Away is an unmissable treat. At this Silver Screen presentation, all over-60s will receive a discounted ticket and a free cup of tea.
