This landmark queer, Black comedy explores the crucial question of who gets to write history.

While working at a video rental store, Cheryl becomes fascinated by the uncredited Black actresses who appeared in films from the 1930s and 40s. One actress, referred to only as ‘The Watermelon Woman’, particularly intrigues her. Cheryl decides to make a documentary in which she will try to reveal the Watermelon Woman’s identity. As her work continues, she also begins to uncover as much about her own life.

The Watermelon Woman was the first feature film directed by a Black lesbian and is a brilliantly sharp and funny exploration of cinephilia, film history, and romance.

This will be a relaxed screening, making cinema-going easier for those needing additional support, including neurodivergent audiences and those living with dementia. Lights are left on low, volume is reduced, and the audience is free to move around.
