The Science of Laughter Screening & Panel Talk
Comedy can bring light to darkness, connect people, help us to understand and empathise or make a cruel joke brutally effective. But how does it work on our brain?
This film and panel talk event will bring a range of expert voices together from the fields of science, medicine and comedy to discuss why we are so compelled by things that make us laugh or wryly smile. Neuroscientist, stand-up comedian and Wellcome Trust Fellow Sophie Scott, “Clown Doctor” Jamie Wood, MediCinema’s Nicola Hill and our host Rachael Castell will investigate comedy’s therapeutic and social functions and its physiological effects. We’ll be screening a range of short films illustrating diverse comic styles, from slapstick to satire, to explore and illuminate the science behind the things that make us laugh.
